What is BIS Registration & How to Get BIS Registration in India?
BIS certification is voluntary; still, many products need to comply with Indian Standards made by the Central Government of India. So, companies’ products stay in the public interest and ensure the protection of humans, animals, and plants on earth. Also, many other reasons bound businesses to get BIS certification for their products.
What is BIS Registration?
BIS certification or registration (ISI or CRS) is compulsory for certain types of products to sell/import in India. The Bureau of Indian Standards checks products’ quality, safety, and reliability under predefined Indian Standards. The Bureau of Indian Standards is a central certification body under the Indian Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. And It replaced the Indian Standards Institution in 1987 to effectively control product certification in India.
How To Get BIS Registration in India?
The BIS registration process can differ in different cases; below is a case-wise explanation.
#1. Normal Process for Domestic Manufactures
In the normal process, the domestic manufacturer first submits a BIS registration application along with necessary documents and fees. After submission, BIS officers come for factory and product inspection and take samples for independent evaluation. If the sample satisfies the standards mentioned by BIS, the manufacturer can expect BIS certification within four months.
#2. Simplified Process for Domestic Manufactures
It’s a fast-forward process to get BIS certification for the product. Domestic manufacturers can get product testing reports from the BIS-approved lab and submit the BIS registration application along with test reports, documents, and fees. After submission, BIS officers come for factory evaluation. And if they find everything satisfactory, the manufacturer receives BIS certification within 30 days.
#3. Tatkal Scheme
This BIS registration scheme is for those manufacturers whose products fall in the mandatory BIS registration category provided by the Indian government. Under this scheme, the manufacturer’s products are processed on a priority basis and meet a strict timeline of 30 days.
#4. Eco Mark Scheme
Eco License is given to a manufacturer who manufactures eco-friendly products, and it is a separate scheme from the normal BIS registration process. Here products are also required to meet other guidelines provided by Indian Standards to get Ecomark. However, the registration process happens similar to domestic manufacture’s registration scheme.
#5. FMCS
Overseas applicants willing to sell their products in the Indian market are required to get the ISI mark under Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme. Generally, this BIS registration process takes six months from the submission date.
Note: BIS registration is voluntary by its nature, but to ensure the security of nature, people, and animals, the central government has made it compulsory to get BIS certification for some categorised products. Most applicants must submit a BIS registration form with or without a product testing report from a BIS-approved lab and requisite fees.
The BIS registration process can take four months in a domestic manufacturing case. But if the manufacturer also attaches a BIS-approved lab report, the registration process can finish in 30 days. In the Tatkal Scheme, the manufacturer falls in the mandatory BIS registration scheme and BIS processes their application form on a priority basis to ensure a 30 days strict timeline to issue a BIS certificate.
